Wines for Christmas as suggested by Brian Davis from the Lambourn Wine Circle

Brian was interviewed on the Yabber Yabber show on Friday 16th of October and he recommended the following wines to purchase for both now and your Christmas celebrations

Wines for now and Christmas

1) Local wines
Sparkling – Winding Wood (award winning Rose), All Angels, Rowles, Hendred
Still whites – Bacchus grape from Rowles and Hendred.
The quality is good and deserve our support!

2) Whites
Forget Pinot Grigio unless over £15 from Alto Adige, Italy
S.Italy whites – Greco, Fiano, Falanghina, Carricante – reasonably priced and great taste
Sauvignon Blanc – up market with Greywacke (ex Cloudy Bay chaps)
Chenin Blanc – South Africa or Loire
Riesling – great grape try Clare valley, Australia.

3)Reds
With turkey anything could go as so much flavour on the plate but for me
Pinot Noir – Central Otago (Felton Road, Mt.Difficulty, Carrick or Escarpment from Martinborough)
Pinot will admirably compliment duck and pheasant and Chile is a good starting point for inexpensive Pinot

For beef – here a robust red such as S.African Chocolate Block (around £20) or  Rustenberg  from SA too
Chianti Classico , Douro reds ( Quinta do Crasto, Wine & Soul) or an upmarket Primitivo

4) Sweet or cheese
For a pud , a sweet wine such as Sauternes, a sweet Chenin (SA or Loire)
Sweet wines go very well with blue cheeses as will a Tawny port (try 20 year old)
If you want to be brave try a sweet red Maury from France – lovely!
