New Cold War History Walks Launched by Greenham Control Tower
This Saturday 1st June sees the first of a series of guided summer walks led by Greenham Control Tower which will reveal the fascinating history of the airfield to the public.
The walks start at the former air traffic control tower and then takes visitors to see installations around the common associated with the Cold War period of the airbase. These include the last remaining section of runway, a fire training structure, and external views of the cruise missile shelters (GAMA site) and the former headquarters building of the 501st Tactical Missile Wing.
Jonathan Sayers, a Director at Greenham Control Tower said: “The season of guided walks we will be running have resulted from a meticulous period of research we have done on the history of the airfield with both direct witnesses and from other documented sources. We aim to bring to life what the airfield was about, the people and the missions that operated at the base along with the legacy of what can still be seen and an outline of structures and features that have been removed. This will be a great chance to get to understand what was here at this site that played a part in the front line of the Cold War and defending the nation as part of the Special Relationship.”
The walks will then onwards be run on Saturdays, roughly a month apart. The morning walks start at 10.30am and an afternoon walk at 3pm. The walks are about three miles in length and take around two hours.
The Cold War History Walks form a new part of a series of varied events run by Greenham Control Tower including a series of exhibitions and evening talks at the grade two listed building.
